Large Bitcoin holders have been quietly accumulating even as the price refuses to move much, with wallets in the 10-to-10,000 BTC range — often labeled whales and sharks — adding more than 20,000 BTC worth roughly $1.2 billion since July 29, according to on-chain data. The buying has occurred in a tight range below $65,000.

The accumulation has coincided with a strong week for US spot Bitcoin ETFs, which pulled in $754.69 million, their best showing since April. That momentum has carried into the new month: the funds took in a further $626 million over the first three trading sessions of August, with BlackRock's IBIT alone accounting for $479 million of it, according to separate flow data.

Why the divergence in holder behavior

Analytics firm Santiment framed the pattern in stark terms. "With the pattern of key stakeholders accumulating and small holders dumping, the probability of $70K+ BTC becomes more and more probable compared to the likelihood of sub-$60K," the firm said.

Two events help explain why smaller holders have been more willing to sell into the move. A July 30 exploit of the Coldcard hardware wallet resulted in roughly $120 million in stolen Bitcoin, rattling confidence among retail holders. Separately, continued uncertainty over the CLARITY Act's path through the Senate has left the near-term regulatory outlook unresolved, adding to the case for caution among smaller wallets even as larger ones buy the dip.

Accumulation without a price breakout — yet

That the reversal has not yet lifted price meaningfully is itself informative: some desks argue the marginal buyer looks more tactical than convicted.

That assessment came from Liya Kalchev of Nexo, who noted that despite the scale of both whale buying and ETF inflows, Bitcoin has yet to stage a decisive move. Traders are watching a close above $65,000 as the level needed to validate a more durable recovery narrative rather than a tactical bounce.
