Blockstream has launched a new feature called Swaps, letting bitcoin holders move funds between the main chain and the Lightning Network without handing custody of their coins to a third party. The company says the tool is meant to fill a gap left by other providers rather than compete with them head-on, describing it as a service that “complements the providers already doing this work rather than replacing any one of them.”
The launch lands at a pointed moment. Just a week earlier, one of the best-known players in that same niche, Boltz, pulled its non-custodial swap service offline entirely, citing a wave of automated exploit attempts it could no longer keep up with.

What Swaps actually does
The feature is aimed at a persistent friction point in bitcoin's two-tier ecosystem: moving value between the base layer and Lightning normally requires either running a Lightning node and managing payment channels, or trusting a custodial exchange to bridge the gap. Blockstream's Swaps lets users convert bitcoin or LBTC, the bitcoin-pegged asset native to Blockstream's Liquid Network sidechain, at the moment of payment, with no channel management and no node required.
Because the mechanism only calls on Liquid and Lightning at the point of settlement, users retain control of their funds throughout the process, according to the company. That trustless design is also what distinguished Boltz's now-defunct service, and it's the same property the wider industry has leaned on since submarine swaps popularized custody-free bridging between Bitcoin and Lightning several years ago.
Why Boltz went dark
Boltz said a steady climb in AI-assisted probing of its infrastructure had accelerated sharply in early August, with attackers iterating on vulnerabilities faster than its small team could patch them. The company stressed that no user funds were lost, since its swaps rely on hashed timelock contracts that either complete a trade in full or automatically reverse it within a single block. Boltz's API remains live so users can process refunds, but wallets including Aqua, Bull Bitcoin and Zeus lost their Boltz-powered swap access within hours of the shutdown.
That episode has become a reference point for the tradeoffs facing non-custodial infrastructure providers: the smaller and more specialized the team, the harder it is to outpace attackers now using AI tooling to accelerate exploit discovery. Blockstream, by contrast, operates at a scale that includes running its own federated Liquid sidechain, giving it more resources to harden a similarly exposed swap mechanism.

Filling the gap, not cornering it
Blockstream's framing, that Swaps complements rather than replaces existing providers, suggests the company is positioning the feature as a stopgap for exactly the kind of disruption Boltz's exit just caused, rather than an attempt to dominate the swap market outright. For everyday Lightning users, the practical effect is one fewer point of failure in a space that, after Boltz's shutdown, has fewer non-custodial bridging options than it did two weeks ago.
Whether Blockstream's version proves more resilient to the same AI-driven attack patterns that felled Boltz remains to be tested. For now, it gives bitcoin holders another route to Lightning liquidity that doesn't require surrendering custody of their coins.
