KuCoin has achieved ISO 22301:2019 certification for its Business Continuity Management System, an internationally recognized standard covering how an organization prepares for, responds to, and recovers from operational disruptions. An independent auditor verified that the exchange has documented plans and processes in place to keep critical services running through disruptions ranging from cyber incidents to infrastructure failures and third-party service outages.

The certification adds to KuCoin's existing compliance credentials, which already include ISO 27001 for information security and SOC 2 Type II, both now grouped alongside ISO 22301 under what the exchange calls its Trust Framework.

Catching Up to Industry Peers

KuCoin isn't the first major exchange to secure this particular certification. Binance obtained ISO 22301 in March, and Crypto.com's custody operations already carry the same standard alongside ISO 27701 and PCI DSS. That makes KuCoin's announcement less a first-mover claim and more an effort to keep pace with the baseline resilience credentials larger competitors have already established.

Why Business Continuity Certification Matters Now

Regulatory frameworks including the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation and Digital Operational Resilience Act, along with guidance from authorities like the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, have increasingly treated operational resilience as a core requirement for exchanges seeking to operate in regulated markets. Certifications like ISO 22301 give exchanges a documented, third-party-audited way to demonstrate that capability to regulators and institutional partners.

A Compliance Signal, Not a Guarantee

Certification confirms that KuCoin has documented recovery plans and passed an external audit of its processes — it doesn't guarantee those plans will hold up during an actual large-scale outage or attack. Still, as more jurisdictions formalize operational-resilience expectations for crypto platforms, credentials like this are becoming a practical prerequisite for exchanges pursuing licenses in stricter regulatory environments. Full details of the certification were shared in KuCoin's official announcement.
