Binance published an explainer this week aimed at separating quantum-computing myths from reality, pushing back against a wave of headlines that have stoked anxiety about whether quantum machines could soon break the cryptography securing Bitcoin and other blockchains. The exchange's message echoes comments from co-founder Changpeng Zhao, who has argued crypto does not need to panic because the industry can migrate to quantum-resistant algorithms well before any real threat materializes.
"All crypto has to do is to upgrade to Quantum-Resistant (Post-Quantum) Algorithms. So, no need to panic," Zhao has said, framing the issue as a manageable engineering problem rather than an existential one.
How Far Away Is the Real Threat?
A cryptographically relevant quantum computer — one actually capable of breaking the elliptic-curve cryptography that secures Bitcoin private keys — does not exist today, and building one requires a specific combination of logical qubits, error rates, and runtime that no current machine comes close to reaching. "We're almost certainly at least a decade away from computers that can actually break existing cryptography," Coin Bureau co-founder Nic Puckrin has said, a timeline echoed across much of the research community.
The Industry Is Already Building a Backup Plan
That runway hasn't stopped preparation. Researchers have proposed hybrid post-quantum cryptography schemes for Bitcoin and Ethereum that combine existing signature algorithms with quantum-resistant ones, an approach outlined in a 2025 paper from the Journal of the British Blockchain Association that could cut the qubit requirements for a successful attack by 20% to 30% over the coming decade. The goal is a migration path blockchains can adopt gradually, rather than a scramble once a workable quantum computer actually arrives.
