Ripple is renewing one of its longest-running academic partnerships. Reece Merrick, the company's senior executive officer and managing director for the Middle East and Africa, announced that Ripple's University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI) is extending its collaboration with NYU Abu Dhabi through 2027, with hands-on research on the XRP Ledger at the center of the renewed agreement.

The work will run through NYU Abu Dhabi's Center for Technology and Economic Development, led by professors Raša Karapandža and Yaw Nyarko, and will expand the university's Volta Initiative alongside direct research on Ripple's ledger. Merrick called it “a great example of turning decentralized technology into real-world impact,” adding he was “excited for the next chapter of innovation coming out of Abu Dhabi.”

A Program That Has Scaled Well Beyond Its Start

UBRI launched in 2018 with roughly $50 million committed across 17 founding university partners, an initiative Ripple describes on its own program page as designed to accelerate blockchain research, technical development and education. Nearly a decade later, the program has grown into more than 60 university partners across 27 countries, backing over 1,500 academic blockchain research projects and more than 800 new or expanded fintech courses, with Ripple's total funding commitment now exceeding $80 million. NYU Abu Dhabi has been part of that network for years; this renewal simply locks in another two years of runway.

Timing Against a Mixed XRP Backdrop

The announcement lands as XRP trades near $1.02, up about 1% over 24 hours, in a market that has been choppier for the token than the academic news might suggest. XRP's cohort of wallets holding at least $1 million in value has still grown by 32 addresses over the past three months even as the token's overall market capitalization declined roughly 29% over the same stretch — a split that points to continued accumulation by larger holders even as the broader market cooled.

Academic partnerships like the NYU Abu Dhabi renewal don't move XRP's price directly, but they're part of Ripple's longer-running strategy of building institutional and research credibility around the XRP Ledger independent of short-term trading conditions — a bet that the ledger's utility case gets stronger the more independent research exists to back it up.
