The US Treasury Department has launched a Quantum-Readiness Task Force, a public-private mechanism designed to move the American financial sector toward quantum-resistant cryptography in an orderly, operationally resilient way. According to PANews, the task force will align its work with the G7 Cyber Expert Group's roadmap for post-quantum cryptography migration, coordinating banks, financial-market infrastructure operators, technology vendors, and other private-sector participants around a shared timeline.

The initiative was announced August 24, 2026, following President Trump's Executive Order 14412 on strengthening cryptographic protections. It is structured around three work lines: industry coordination and post-quantum cryptography migration, third-party and vendor readiness, and — notably for this audience — digital assets and emerging technology risk.

Why Digital Assets Get Their Own Workstream

Public blockchains rely heavily on elliptic-curve cryptography to secure wallets and validate transactions — the same class of cryptographic primitive that a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could theoretically break. Treasury's decision to carve out digital assets as one of only three workstreams, rather than folding it into general vendor risk, signals that regulators view blockchain infrastructure as a distinct attack surface requiring its own migration plan rather than a bolt-on fix. The private sector isn't waiting for Washington to act.
