Highlights
- US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a $202 million net outflow on Aug. 28, ending a nine-day inflow streak that had pulled in more than $3 billion for the month.
- Spot Ethereum ETFs moved the opposite way, taking in $102 million in net inflows the same day.
- The streak that just ended had included single-day hauls of $337.6 million, $314.3 million and $232.2 million over the prior week.
- The split in flows suggests institutional allocators are rotating exposure between the two assets rather than exiting crypto altogether.
US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds saw $202 million in net outflows on Aug. 28, according to data tracked by SoSoValue and reported by Wu Blockchain, snapping a nine-day run of consecutive inflows. The streak, which began Aug. 17, had been one of the steadiest stretches of ETF demand so far in 2026, helping push the month's total past $3 billion. Spot Ethereum ETFs moved in the opposite direction on the same day, taking in $102 million in net inflows, underscoring a split in how institutional money is currently positioning across the two largest crypto assets by market value.
A Hot Streak Breaks
The nine-day Bitcoin ETF inflow run that just ended was itself something of a comeback. It followed a rough stretch in which bitcoin slid toward roughly $79,000 on hawkish signals from Federal Reserve officials, then steadily rebuilt momentum with daily inflows of $232.2 million on Aug. 26, $314.3 million on Aug. 25 and $337.6 million on Aug. 24, according to figures from SoSoValue's ETF tracker. Those numbers had put August on pace to challenge October 2025 as the strongest month on record for spot Bitcoin ETF demand. Thursday's reversal doesn't erase that progress — the month's cumulative total remains solidly positive — but it marks the first pause in accumulation since the run began, a data point trading desks will weigh heading into month-end rebalancing.

Ether Funds Buck the Trend
That Ethereum ETFs absorbed $102 million the same day Bitcoin funds saw redemptions points to rotation rather than a broad retreat from crypto exposure. Ether-linked products have drawn increasingly consistent institutional demand in recent weeks: the combined bitcoin-and-ether ETF complex logged roughly $2.6 billion in inflows over the prior week alone, the strongest weekly total since October 2025, as both asset classes drew renewed institutional interest. That backdrop makes Aug. 28's split more notable, since it is not that money left crypto ETFs broadly but that it shifted destination. For allocators running multi-asset crypto mandates, a single day of divergence is rarely decisive on its own, but sustained gaps between the two flow lines are one of the clearer signals available for how institutions are weighing relative value between bitcoin and ether heading into the fall.
What Comes Next
The immediate question is whether Aug. 28 was a one-day breather or the start of a longer cooldown. With four to five trading sessions left before August closes, the month's final tally will hinge on whether the Bitcoin ETF complex can resume net buying or instead extends the outflow. SoSoValue's daily tracker remains the most direct read on that question, and a second consecutive down day would carry more signal than Thursday's print alone. Markets will also be watching whether bitcoin's price action stabilizes enough to draw allocators back in before month-end flows are finalized.
