BlackRock's spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs absorbed roughly $1.17 billion in crypto over a single 48-hour stretch this week, according to on-chain tracking, as the asset manager's IBIT and ETHA funds pulled in 11,098 BTC and 132,769 ETH through routine creation activity.

The purchases were tracked by Lookonchain, which monitors wallet flows tied to major institutional custodians and exchange-traded products in real time. The scale of the two-day haul places it among the more aggressive accumulation windows BlackRock's crypto ETFs have logged since launch, and it lands in the middle of a broader institutional inflow streak that built through mid-to-late August.

Part of a Multi-Week Inflow Streak

The 48-hour buying spree did not happen in isolation. IBIT alone pulled in $588.5 million over three trading sessions from August 17 to 19, while ETHA brought in $212.7 million for Ethereum products over the same stretch — a run that continued into the following week as combined Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF inflows topped $1 billion in what several trackers described as the category's best week since April. BlackRock accounted for roughly 80% of that week's Bitcoin ETF demand, cementing IBIT's position as the primary entry point for institutions re-entering digital assets after a stretch of tepid flows earlier in the year.

Buying Into Volatility, Not Around It

What makes the timing notable is that BlackRock's accumulation window overlapped almost exactly with a period of extreme price volatility, as Bitcoin squeezed sharply higher on Treasury and regulatory catalysts before a violent flash crash erased tens of billions in market value days later. Sustained ETF creation activity through that kind of swing suggests the buying reflects programmatic, longer-horizon institutional allocation rather than traders chasing the rally — creations driven by end-investor demand for ETF shares tend to continue regardless of short-term price direction, unlike the leveraged futures positioning that amplified the subsequent crash.

Why the Distinction Matters

Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs settle in the underlying asset, meaning every net creation like this one represents real coins moving out of circulating supply and into custody on behalf of institutional and retail ETF holders. A sustained run of net creations, even one interrupted by sharp volatility, points to steady demand from allocators building positions gradually — a different signal than the derivatives-driven liquidation cascades that have otherwise dominated crypto headlines this week.
