BNB Smart Chain activated its Pasteur hard fork on mainnet on August 25, bundling three separate proposals into one upgrade aimed at tightening cross-chain bridge security and speeding up block production. PANews reported the fork combines BEP-682, BEP-695 and BEP-675, covering validator verification, key-rotation controls and block-building throughput respectively.

Three Proposals, One Coordinated Fix

Each BEP addresses a distinct weak point in the chain's validator and bridge infrastructure. Cointelegraph confirmed that BEP-682 rejects duplicate validator entries during cross-chain light-block verification, closing a gap where the same validator could effectively be counted twice when approving bridge transactions. BEP-695 tightens validator key-rotation, slashing and governance-voting controls, ensuring old keys lose their authority immediately and restricted addresses can't vote. BEP-675 changes how block builders work with validators: specialist builders can now submit pre-executed blocks for validators to verify by checking signatures, rather than forcing every validator to re-execute each block from scratch within the chain's roughly 450-millisecond block window.

Why Bridge and Throughput Fixes Matter Together

Bundling a bridge-security patch with a throughput upgrade reflects the twin pressures facing high-volume EVM chains: cross-chain bridges remain one of the most exploited pieces of crypto infrastructure industry-wide, while rising on-chain activity keeps pushing networks to find ways to process more transactions without touching gas limits or block times. Internal QANet testing cited by Cointelegraph showed the new block-building route lifted throughput roughly 88%, from 1,237 to 2,324 transactions per second, though BNB Chain was careful to flag those as controlled test results rather than mainnet-confirmed numbers. If the gains hold up under real traffic, it would meaningfully widen BNB Chain's capacity headroom during peak usage without a more disruptive architectural change.

What Comes Next

The immediate follow-up is mainnet telemetry: validators and block explorers should start showing whether real-world throughput approaches the QANet test figures, and whether the bridge-verification fix measurably reduces the class of validator-duplication risk BEP-682 targets. Any anomalies in validator key rotation or governance voting in the days after activation would also be an early signal of implementation issues worth watching before the upgrade is considered fully proven in production.
