Microsoft is pushing a new OneDrive Photos application onto Windows 11 machines through routine system updates rather than as an opt-in download, according to a report first surfaced by Windows Latest. The app is arriving quietly via Windows Update or OneDrive client updates, meaning many users are discovering it already installed rather than choosing to add it.
Once present, OneDrive Photos automatically indexes photos stored locally on a PC — and it does so even for users who aren't signed into a Microsoft account. The app layers AI-powered search on top of that index, letting users find images using natural-language queries or text pulled from photos via optical character recognition.
The Facial Grouping Feature
The more sensitive addition is an optional "People" feature that groups photos by similar faces, functioning much like the face-tagging tools long available in Google Photos or Apple's Photos app. Microsoft has built in some guardrails: according to the reporting, faces are visible only to the user, aren't shared with third parties, and can be deleted by disabling the feature entirely.
Even so, the feature requires explicit opt-in in some jurisdictions given how biometric data — facial geometry included — is treated under privacy law in places like Illinois and the European Union. That opt-in requirement is likely why the feature ships disabled by default rather than active out of the box.
You Can't Remove It Without Removing OneDrive
One friction point stands out: OneDrive Photos cannot be uninstalled on its own. Users who don't want the app on their machine at all have to remove OneDrive from Windows entirely to get rid of it, a step that also disables cloud file sync for anyone actually using the service.
That all-or-nothing setup echoes criticism Microsoft faced in 2024, when its AI-powered Recall feature — which continuously screenshots a user's activity for later AI-assisted search — drew enough backlash over privacy risks that the company was forced to overhaul it and make it opt-in by default rather than shipping it active.
Part of a Broader Pattern
Microsoft isn't alone in quietly pushing AI features into software people already have installed. Google took a similar approach in May when it began rolling out its Gemini Nano AI model through routine Chrome browser updates, without requiring users to seek the capability out.
The pattern reflects how major platform holders are increasingly treating AI feature rollouts as background updates rather than opt-in product launches — a shift that puts the burden on users to notice new capabilities, understand what data they touch, and decide whether to keep them enabled.
