Cross River, a banking-as-a-service provider, has been enlisted to supply the banking infrastructure behind X Money, the financial services arm of Elon Musk's social platform X. The partnership will underpin peer-to-peer payments, FDIC-insured interest-bearing accounts and Visa debit cards for users of the service.
Cross River describes itself as delivering embedded financial infrastructure for payments, cards, lending and cryptocurrency services to fintech and technology companies through its regulated banking platform and payment rails. Notably, the announcement made no mention of cryptocurrency or stablecoin functionality being part of the current rollout, despite Cross River's broader work in that space.
A Long Road to Launch
X Money has been years in the making. Musk first floated the idea of turning X into “the everything app” back in 2022, with payments positioned as a core pillar of that vision. The product remained largely conceptual until May 2025, when Musk confirmed that X Money had entered limited beta testing, cautioning at the time that “extreme care” was required given the service would be handling users' savings.
The beta expanded further in March 2026, when X opened the service to a wider group of external testers ahead of a broader public rollout. Cross River's involvement marks the next concrete step in that expansion, giving X Money the regulated banking rails needed to move real money on behalf of customers.
Regulatory Groundwork
Operating a payments product at the scale Musk has described requires clearing a dense patchwork of state and federal rules. X has already secured money transmitter licenses in more than 40 U.S. states and registered with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, the regulatory groundwork needed to legally facilitate peer-to-peer payments across most of the country.
With that licensing largely in place and a banking partner now confirmed, X Money's path from beta product to mainstream payments app looks increasingly concrete, even as questions remain about when — or whether — crypto and stablecoin features will be layered on top of the FDIC-insured accounts and debit cards Cross River is set to power.
