Highlights

  • DeFi tokens led a broad crypto rally, with the sector up 6.80% on the day
  • UNI rose as much as 15%, HYPE gained over 10%, and GENIUS jumped more than 20%
  • ARB surged over 32%, with NEAR, UNI, APT and OP all posting double-digit gains
  • Two fresh wallets withdrew 1.07 million UNI ($8.38 million) from exchanges as the SEC's tokenized-stock exemption fueled buying

Crypto markets turned sharply risk-on Friday, with the DeFi sector posting a 6.80% gain that outpaced the broader market's roughly 2%-to-7% advance across the board. The rally coincided with two macro overhangs clearing at once — a widely expected rate decision landing without surprise, and oil prices retreating from recent highs — alongside a fresh regulatory tailwind specific to decentralized exchanges: the SEC's five-year innovation exemption for tokenized US stocks, which cleared a path for platforms like Uniswap to host trading in tokenized equities without falling under exchange registration rules.

UNI was at the center of the move. On-chain data shows two newly created wallets withdrew a combined 1.07 million UNI, worth about $8.38 million, from Binance, Bybit and OKX as the token climbed. The token was last changing hands around $7.80, up more than 15% on the day — a jump that tracks directly with the SEC's decision, since Uniswap v4 is one of the platforms best positioned to host the compliant tokenized-stock trading the exemption now allows.

The rest of the DeFi and altcoin complex followed

The move wasn't confined to Uniswap's own token. NEAR jumped more than 26% to around $3.20, ARB rose roughly 32.7% to about $0.22, APT gained 22.8% to $0.688, and OP climbed close to 18.5% to $0.114. Within DeFi specifically, GENIUS led the sector with a 20.66% gain, while Hyperliquid's HYPE token added just over 10%, part of the same push that has helped Uniswap's monthly volume outpace its three closest DEX rivals combined. Traders reading the move as a single story pointed to the same three catalysts stacking on top of each other in the space of a few hours: a rate decision that removed uncertainty rather than adding to it, an oil pullback that eased inflation-adjacent pressure on risk assets broadly, and a DeFi-specific regulatory green light that gave decentralized exchanges a concrete reason to rally independent of the macro backdrop.

The gains also came against a backdrop of receding caution: the run-up to the rate decision had kept much of the altcoin complex range-bound, with traders reluctant to add risk while the outcome of the hike remained unconfirmed. Once the decision landed without a surprise, that pent-up positioning appeared to unwind quickly, which helps explain why the rally hit so many tokens across so many sectors at once rather than concentrating in a single name.

The exemption's early real-world impact is already showing up in trading data beyond token prices. Roughly 80% of trading volume in Robinhood's stock tokens has been routed through Uniswap's decentralized exchange infrastructure, with cumulative volume through that channel reaching about $10 billion — a sign that the tokenized-equity flow the SEC just formally cleared has, in practice, already been running through DeFi rails for some time — part of a broader pool of on-chain tokenized assets that has already reached $346.1 billion. That existing volume base is part of why traders treated Friday's regulatory news as confirmation rather than a cold start, and why the reaction across UNI and the broader DeFi sector was immediate rather than gradual.

Whether the move holds into next week will likely depend on how quickly platforms move to formalize compliant tokenized-stock offerings under the new exemption, and whether the panic-driven caution that had been weighing on altcoins over the past week continues to unwind now that two of the market's biggest near-term uncertainties have cleared. Traders will also be watching whether exchanges follow Uniswap's lead in building out compliant tokenized-equity products of their own, which would broaden the exemption's impact beyond the DeFi venues that reacted first.
